FAQ SECTION
Will a battery work with my system?
You have a hybrid inverter, or your existing inverter is compatible with a separate AC‑coupled battery system. Most UK systems can accept a battery with either a hybrid inverter upgrade or an AC ‑coupled battery such as Fox ESS, GivEnergy, BYD, etc.
How long does installation take?
For a typical home, installation usually takes 1–2 days depending on the size of the system and roof type. Battery installations may add an extra half‑day to a full day.
Can I add more storage later?
Most modern battery systems are modular, which means you can start with a smaller capacity and expand it as your energy needs grow.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, no. Solar panels on homes fall under Permitted Development in the UK, meaning you can install them without applying for planning permission
Will this still work in winter?
Yes. Modern solar battery systems are designed to work efficiently all year round, including during the colder winter months. In fact, lithium‑ion batteries perform very well in cool temperatures, and winter has no negative impact on their ability to store or release energy.
What does change in winter is the amount of solar generation, not the battery itself. Shorter days and lower sun angles mean your panels may produce less electricity, so the battery may not fill as often — but it will still operate normally, safely, and reliably.
At Northern Solar, all our battery systems are installed with the correct weather protection, ventilation, and temperature considerations to ensure year‑round performance.
